The municipality of Rome has decided to impose a fine on people who, taken in a fresh outburst, intend to enjoy a bath in the fountains of the Italian capital.
“We must protect our city, and having good behavior is paramount,” said Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi in a Facebook video published today.
People caught in picnic near the fountains, those who dip their feet or bathe in it will have to pay between 40 and 240 euros of fine. The municipal decree runs until October 31st.
The Italian press has denounced these rudenesses often committed by tourists.“The continuous incivility: tourists in the fountains and the flowerbeds,” it was read recently.
Like the famous Trevi fountain, monuments like the Barcaccia fountain from the 17th century, and sacked in 2015 by Dutch football fans, are concerned by the measure.
