West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi to discuss common opposition candidate for upcoming president election.
Speaking to media after her interaction with Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Discussed important matter regarding politics and president election both”. However Mamata clarified that no name has been discussed as of now. She has stressed for the need of a united opposition candidate to put up a tough fight against BJP led NDA, which has numbers on its side.
Mamatha reached 10, Janpath, in New Delhi in the evening, according to news agency ANI. Sonia has already held meetings with JD (U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and NCP leader Sharad Pawar over common Presidential candidate from opposition.
Whilw The West Bengal Pradesh Congress committee maintained that the Bengal unit has no details of the meeting and it was in no way connected to its functioning. “The Congress high command has been coordinating with 19 opposition parties to discuss the Presidential election. Mamata Banerjee was contacted much later af ter detailed discussions with the Left parties and others. On the contrary, Mamata Banerjee is desperate to prove Trinamool Congress as a non-BJP, non-NDA party .
There is a speculation that Banerjee will also meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal next week.
